Energy Efficient Window Treatments FAQ
Are energy efficient window treatments used to reduce hydro bills?
Yes, the energy conserved can result in reduced monthly bills, as less cooling is needed in the summer and less heating costs in the winter. Energy efficient window coverings insulate the windows against heat transfer and drafts, as well as blocking out direct sunshine for less radiant heat in the summer.
Which energy efficient shades can protect large windows or sliding doors?
We have a number of options. The large expanses of glass from oversized windows and sliders are a common culprit of heating and cooling challenges in Ontario homes. Therefore, it’s important to choose an insulating option that will block incoming light during the hottest times of day, as well as create a barrier of protection so the exterior air cannot influence interior temperatures.
Vertical honeycomb shades are a great way to cover sliding doors, as they match the movement of the doors, sliding to the side to open. These vertical shades are also a great option for large picture windows in your home. The cellular structure is designed to reduce or block the light and insulate the glass. The sizing of vertical cellular shades ranges from widths of 8.5 meters to just over 3.6 meters tall.
Horizontal shades can also protect the interior of your home, whether you are covering large windows, sliding doors, or both. Horizontal cellular shades are typically customized to cover one section of glass, meaning a sliding door would be covered with two shades. This allows you to leave one shade lowered, while the other is raised as needed to access the outdoors. Two of the best insulating shades are the Sonnette Cellular Roller Shades and Duette Honeycomb Shades. The Hunter Douglas cellular roller shades will protect windows with maximum height of 2 meters and maximum width of 2 meters. Duette honeycomb shades are capable of covering heights over 4 meters with a maximum width of just over 3.5 meters.
Many times, homeowners are drawn to the idea of outfitting large windows and sliding doors with custom drapery. Drapes can be an energy efficient covering, especially when the proper fabrics and liners are selected. Thermal curtains can block light and drafts at the window, keeping the light from heating up the surfaces and creating a layer of insulation that reduces the chance of exterior temperatures influencing the interior.
How much light do energy efficient window treatments allow into the room?
You can customize a wide range of natural lighting–even with energy efficient coverings. Considered the most energy efficient shades on the market, Duette honeycomb shades are available with Clearview, a translucent fabric that offers incredible views and invites natural light. The cellular structure of the shade still manages to regulate interior temperatures with an award-winning performance. This collection, among others, provides a variety of light filtering fabrics–all the way to blackout shades, so you can customize the lighting you let into your home.
Do blackout shades provide energy savings?
Yes, they can be considered a good way to reduce energy usage. Much of the interior temperature can be influenced by radiant heat, which is caused by direct sunshine entering the windows and heating up surfaces. This causes the temperature to rise. Blackout shades stop the process, keeping light from entering. However, simple blackout shades are not the best option for insulating the windows against heat and draft. The layered fabric of blackout roman shades would be a good option versus a simple roller shade.
